Odyssey White Ice 5

What to say about the Odyssey White Ice 5...?

Before I start with  this description, I'll let you know that I'm not usually a fan of D shaped putters, and this one was no exception. Apart from its shape what really put me off was the fact that you can't see all of hitting surface at address. Just as in the picture here, the shaft bend covers the heel.

Also when I found the curved shape of the sole made it feel disconcertingly as if the heel was always raised off the ground. This also gave the visual impression that the sight line was pointing left all the time, which I found off-putting.

How does it feel?

Much like the Backstryke 2 Ball, the feeling of the putter face will probably take you some time to get used to. The sound it makes for starters had me surprised. For such a big putter head, the sound you get when you strike the putt is a surprisingly high pitched "ping".

I also found that the feel was quite hard and, for want of a better word, "metallic". The fact that it has the best putter insert in the business in the face seemed to make no difference whatsoever.

In short it wasn't a feel I took to immediately - of course you may well be different. If you want a duller feel, I'd still go for the either the Odyssey 2 Ball or the 2 Ball blades.

However, when you strike a putt with the Odyssey White Ice 5, all these little problems are instantly forgivable - the feel is so soft and yet so direct that you feel very "connected" to each and every putt - the ball doesn't jump off the face in the slightest.

OK, I might be going over the top here, but the feel you get off this putter is almost electric!

How does it roll the ball?

The roll was awesome too. No jumping, twitching or misbehaving of any kind.

The more I tried this putter out, the more I began to realize that the insert is all that I liked about it. Because the same insert is available in many other putter shapes, I came to the conclusion that I should look at the rest of the range to find a shape you actually like!
